Artivism

Artivism includes diverse forms of activism that combine militancy with some degree of creativity or artistic intention. They are usually carried out by anonymous persons or collectives, concerned with the politic intention of their actions and not with with any personal artistic career. Many manifestations of artivism happen in public space, and often deal with the problematics of its use and regulation.

The best known form of public artivism is billboard alteration, of which the Billboard Liberation Front is the most characteristic collective. Other examples of its wide range of tactics include guerrilla gardening, the installation of ghost bikes, and the actions of activists and groups such as the Space Hijackers, ReBar or Reverend Billy.
